Praça Damiana da Cunha : preservação e memória do patrimônio de Mossâmedes, Goiás

Abstract

This study, situated within the research line Culture, Preservation, and Identities, seeks to underscore the critical importance of preserving public spaces that embody symbolic and cultural significance for the communities that engage with them. Anchored in the conceptual framework of memory and informed by a multidisciplinary dialogue with key theoretical contributions, the research problematizes the role of public space in the construction of collective identity. The investigation centers on Damiana da C unha Square, located in the small city of Mossâmedes, Goiás, and explores the interrelations among memory, cultural heritage, spatial experience, and urban sociability. The methodological approach was structured into four sequential phases: (1) a comprehen sive bibliographic review of literature addressing heritage, memory, and identity; (2) the collection and analysis of written and photographic documentation sourced from the Parish of Mossâmedes, the Parish of Goiás, and the Municipal Government; (3) the c onduction of semi structured interviews with local residents who habitually interact with the square; and (4) the systematization of data for the production of a technical report and the development of the research product. As a main outcome, a collaborati ve and archival digital platform was conceptualized and developed. This platform functions as a repository for historical records, photographs, personal narratives, and other digital media, aiming to preserve and disseminate the collective memory associate d with Damiana da Cunha Square and, by extension, the broader historical identity of Mossâmedes. The initiative contributes to the reinforcement of place based memory and the valorization of shared heritage.
